Antique, young Queen Victoria, Titanic era, J. Gosnell Tooth Paste jar/ pot lid

$ 21.09

Availability: 17 in stock
  • Modified Item: No
  • Country/Region of Manufacture: United Kingdom
  • All returns accepted: ReturnsNotAccepted
  • Condition: The lid is in pretty good shape, no repairs or cracks....just the usual, customary age-crazing for these old pieces and small spots of burial stain which, at the same time, authenticates this piece as genuine. The base section is from my supply of spares and is from the same time period...and is a pretty good fit, only the white of the ceramic is a slightly different hue of white than the white background of the lid, but not a big deal in my opinion. Please check out all the pics and if you have any questions, please ask them prior to committing to buy. Thanks.

    Description

    You are bidding on a
    genuine and authentic
    Titanic era toothpaste jar
    lid
    . These
    John Gosnell
lids were produced in a number of different colors, (including
    black &
    w
    hite one's
    like this one)
, and I personally, have seen (in magazine articles), lids like this, which were retrieved from the debris field, of the wreck of the Titanic. (There were only 2 retrieval expeditions...which have now (since that time) been prohibited.
It has been noted that quite a few of these jars have been retrieved from the debris field of Titanic, and so, it is the opinion of some, that the
    White Star line
may have provided these ceramic jars of toothpaste as
    complimentary items
    to the 1st & 2nd class passengers.
    So, let me be clear
, this jar was not retrieved from the bottom of the Atlantic ocean, but is the
    same type
    , and from the
    same era
, as those which were retrieved.
This is a genuine antique piece from before, and around the period of the Titanic era
. The lid has the customary glaze crazing, & otherwise is in excellent preserved condition.
    For condition report
please see "Item specifics/Seller notes" above and check out all the pics as they form an important part of the overall description.
The lid measures 3" in diameter. The front profile of the lid shows an
image of a young Queen Victoria
    .
A great memento of this era & of the tragedy of the Titanic!
FOR VIEWERS WHO MAY NOT BE FAMILIAR WITH THESE DELIGHTFUL LITTLE LIDDED JARS....THEY WERE USED BETWEEN APPROX. 1840-1920 TO MARKET VARIOUS PRODUCTS WHICH CAME IN A PASTE FORM. AFTER WWI THEY BECAME OBSOLETE AS MORE MODERN AND ECONOMICAL FORMS OF PACKAGING REPLACED THEM.   THE RECOVERY AND COLLECTING OF THESE OLD PIECES HAS BECOME A POPULAR, WORLD-WIDE HOBBY, AND A QUAINT REMINDER OF A BYGONE ERA.         BE ASSURED, YOU ARE BIDDING ON A GENUINE AND AUTHENTIC PERIOD PIECE.
