Description
VINTAGE ANTIQUE ORIGINAL CROW BUFFALO HORN HAIR ROACH WAR BONNET INDIAN PRE 1890 ERA NATIVE AMERICAN WARRIOR HEADDRESS. Measures 17"W x 8"T x 15"D with an inside circumference of about 22". A totally unique authentic and rare item. This phenomenally rare headdress is from the Crow Native American Indians of Montana. The Crow Tribe were traditional enemies of the Sioux and Cheyenne Tribes, both very powerful and warlike cultures that fought the Crow every chance they had. This Warrior War Bonnet shows a porcupine quill hair roach at the top with polychrome painted parfleche, hide bonnet cap and is further adorned with harness saddle leather, a glass trade seed beaded brow band, and Buffalo Bison horns. The brow band has trade thread sewn glass trade seed bead and petit beads in a floral pattern in colors of greasy yellow, red white hearts, greasy green, Cheyenne pink, cobalt, rose, and dark red. The Buffalo Horns are trimmed in white fur caps and drops of Upland game (likely Sharp-Tailed Grouse) benches of feathers tied with trade cloth in a red dye, hawk trade brass bells, and horsetail hair. The skull cap also shows a green geometric pattern painted on and the hair roach has a green woven center. There is bead loss on the brow band but otherwise fine and complete. This is truly an unusual and rare piece from the 1850s to 1880s era. Provenance; from a historic Eastern Montana American Indian Collection, where the piece was found to be an authentic original, one of the finest American Indian antiquities in Montana still in decent displayable unrestored condition.
